In 2020, following the wake of the George Floyd killing, there was a surge in awareness and organizational efforts to focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) for our black and brown neighbors. As a community mental health provider, Fraser had seen first-hand the result of trauma, poverty, and lack of resources on our BIPOC clients. In the wake of the George Floyd murder, we also began to see the effects of prejudice, trauma, and violence on our staff, and we wanted to do something meaningful to support them.We set a task to make Fraser truly more inclusive for our staff and the clients we serve but quickly discovered we needed something more: We needed a mentor for both our leadership and our staff. That was when we partnered with Dr. Mack to help lift our Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging program to new relevance.Dr. Mack worked with worked with our Human Resources department to identify barriers to hiring. He created self-guided trainings to softly bring along those who felt confused or resistant. And he advised Fraser senior leadership on all the elements that should be explored to implement a full DEIB program.Where Dr. Mack shone the brightest, however, was in his interactions with staff. As an experienced professional in the mental health field, he spoke knowledgably to our staffs’ fear, sorrow, and need for support. As a Black man, he spoke knowledgably about micro-aggressions, issues with coworkers, and life as a BIPOC staff.Dr. Mack's guidance helped Fraser grow through a very difficult time and gave us a path forwrd to create greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging by opening our efforts to other marginalized groups such as LGBTQ individuals, the elderly, veterans, and those with mental illness. We are eternally grateful for Dr. Mack's support.- Diane S. Cross, Fraser President & CEO
